Display : PAL& This slideshow of about 18 pictures&is aimed, according to the intro, at&the five to ten age group. It's an&educational disk covering the time&"from the formation of the earth to
the dinosaurs".& The graphics in lo-res 32 colour&format are all very well drawn. Some&of the pictures may contain digitized&images though I can't be sure about&that. If not, then full marks to the&artist, whoever he or she may be.&There's also music playing but it's
pretty repetitive.& The pictures all contain some text&describing what's on the screen. This&gives only the briefest of details but&is in a suitably large text. I also&get the feeling that the writer is not&much older than this slideshow's
intended age group.& This is the first disk from JX&Studios but the only information given&about who they are is an address and a&request for a
2 donation if you find&the slideshow at all useful. So would&children find it interesting? Perhaps,&though it contains probably a lot less&information than in the numerous books&which I'm sure are available and&covering the same subject. (The Rite&Of Spring piece in Disney's Fantasia#covers exactly the same time span.)& It may however inspire some&children to get out a paint program&and tackle a few prehistoric drawings&of their own, either from scratch or&by using these ones as a starting&point. This would be easy as all the&pictures are iconised DPaint files.&It's a pity some of the brushes used&in the pictures weren't included here&as clip-art with a suggestion that the&kids might like to try drawing some&scenes of their own. A set for each
epoch perhaps?& As an educational disk this falls&far short of what it might have been.&It really needs much more text&descriptions and some form of&interaction such as clicking on the&dinosaurs to find out more about them&before repeated viewing would be&likely. Also the text and pictures&should be presented so that children#can use them in their own projects.& How The Earth Began's strength is&it's well drawn pictures so hopefully&JX Studios will build on that
